Directorate of Excavations and Archaeological Surveys
The Directorate of Excavations and Archaeological Surveys is one of the main directorates of the Department of Antiquities. It is responsible for formulating policies for archaeological projects in Jordan—including surveys, excavations, conservation, restoration, documentation, and study—covering both local and foreign projects. Its work is based on the Jordanian Antiquities Law No. 21 of 1988 and its amendments, as well as regulations governing archaeological work issued under the law, such as the Regulations for Archaeological Projects in Jordan. The Directorate also coordinates with scientific institutions involved in archaeological work, including universities and museums.
Sections of the Directorate:
1. Excavations and Archaeological Surveys Section
Receiving and carefully reviewing work plans for both local and foreign archaeological projects, assessing them from scientific, administrative, and financial perspectives, and providing necessary recommendations to the Director General.
Coordinating with relevant security authorities to obtain the required security approvals and monitoring the project team’s activities before and during fieldwork.
Issuing the necessary permits specifying the location and duration of work after ensuring all applicable fees have been settled.
Monitoring the archaeological team’s work through direct communication with the team director, the Department’s representative, and the director of the regional archaeological office, ensuring compliance with the provisions of the Regulations for Archaeological Projects in Jordan issued under the Jordanian Antiquities Law No. 21 of 1988 and its amendments.
Facilitating the work of foreign missions by preparing official letters for relevant institutions and government agencies.
Collaborating with ministries and other governmental institutions to conduct necessary preliminary surveys of areas designated for major development and infrastructure projects, and performing archaeological surveys and rescue excavations when required.
Cooperating with foreign missions on surveying activities by involving the Department’s surveyors and equipment in certain foreign archaeological projects.
Communicating with relevant authorities to obtain the required approvals for bringing in equipment and tools necessary for archaeological work..
2. Loans and International Cooperation Section:
Organizing loan agreements for archaeological objects discovered during excavation projects.
Inspecting archaeological objects to assess their suitability for loan for study, analysis, and publication.
Monitoring the scholarly publication of objects that have been loaned.
Coordinating the study of archaeological objects within Jordan.
Organizing local and international archaeological exhibitions aimed at promoting Jordan’s national heritage and strengthening cooperation with regional and international partners
3. Permits and Follow-Up Section:
Coordinating with relevant authorities to issue the necessary permits for archaeological excavations and surveys.
Ensuring that all legal and administrative requirements are met before issuing permits
Reviewing permit applications and verifying the accuracy of submitted documents and information.
Monitoring field activities at archaeological sites to ensure work is carried out in accordance with approved permits.
Coordinating with project teams and specialists in excavation and survey activities to ensure adherence to schedules and applicable laws.
Ensuring that research teams comply with local and international regulations related to excavation and cultural heritage preservation
Preparing periodic reports on the status of issued permits and follow-up activities.
Reporting any violations or breaches observed during the implementation of activities.
Coordinating with research institutions, universities, and other governmental entities regarding archaeological activities
Developing plans to improve procedures related to permit issuance and follow-up
Proposing improvements to expedite the permit process and achieve research objectives more effectively.
Taking appropriate measures to address any issues or delays in the implementation of activities.
